Facebook Pages will be upgrade to Timeline from March 30th’2012 allowing organisations, projects and businesses to express themselves more visually to their target audience. ‘YOU WHAT! HOW? Hang on just got my head around the last format!” Don’t panic below is some information and links to get yourself up to speed.

Starting today, when you visit your Page, you will see a message at the top of your Page allowing you to preview your Page in the new design. Please note that when you turn this view on, your new Page design will only be visible to you and other admins. People who visit your Page will not be able to see your Page in the new design until you choose to publish your new design. For the next four weeks, you’ll be able to experiment with the new design in a safe environment. You can add milestones, a cover photo, as well as other content. That content won’t go live to the public. You may also go back to previous posts and star important ones to feature them on your timeline.

(Please note that posts that you make on your Page and changes you make to your profile picture will be visible to the public. However, starring posts, adding a cover photo, adding a milestone, or pinning a post won’t be visible unless you choose to publish your new Page design before March 30, 2012. )

Major new Facebook Page features include the option to:

➢	Have a cover image across the top of the Facebook page.
➢	Pin posts to the top of the feed for one week.
➢	Receive and respond to private messages from fans.
➢	Highlight feature posts from amongst your page feed.

Cover Photo:Size of image; 851 x 315 pixes.

Choose an image which conveys the essence of your organisation, project or business an showcases our product or services.

Profile image:Size of image: 180 x 180 pixes.

Choose a logo that people associate with your organisation, project or business.

Here are some resources for getting started:

http://ads.ak.facebook.com/ads/FacebookAds/Pages_Product_Guide_022712.pdf

View example Pages

https://www.facebook.com/about/pages

Read general FAQs

https://www.facebook.com/help/pages/new-design

Top tips:

- The new Facebook page timeline works best if you are using ‘images’ and ‘film footage’, so invest some time to review your archives and do some google and youtube searches for content that would appeal to your viewers. (remember to reference accordingly and your have the relevant media consent etc.)

- Go through and review your Facebook page timeline, check your history. Can your highlight previous content to make the page appeal to your target audience (young people, community members, investors.)

- Be brave and remove content that is not applicable or offering added value.

One of the biggest considerations for youth practitioners and teachers is the new PRIVATE MESSAGING option on Facebook Pages. You have the option as the admin to activate this or not (this is accessible on the ADMIN PANNEL, located to the top right hand side under the help button.) As a provision or educational establishment this could be a very useful tool to engage with your online community members. However there needs to be critical reflection about the capacity to respond to messages and signposting to off line services if required.

Check out this good advice from Mashable: If you have a social media plan that’s working for you, stick to it. If your plan could use some adjustments, now would be a good time to see what has been working and what hasn’t and how Timeline can assist with some improvements. If you’re winging your social media plan day-by-day, this is a good time to sit down and hash out why you have a Facebook Page in the first place. (Jim Belosic, Timeline for Brands: How to Prepare for Your Company’s New Facebook Page. 1st March’12)

Thanks to the Facebook team for emailing and sharing helpful information and links to share with my online community network.

Online Youth Outreach endorsed the submission of a document to the Leveson Inquiry and the current debates within the Press Complaints Commission and Press Board of Finance about the culture, ethics and regulation of journalism in the UK as it provided an opportunity to highlight potential discriminatory practice by the print media with regards to children and young people. This submission by The Youth Agency Team makes a number of recommendations to effect improvements around the Press Complaints Commission procedures and the Editors Code of Practice itself which hopes to find support from the Leveson Inquiry team. We support the four recommendations will help to improve press coverage of children and young people in the future, and so engender more interest and trust among young readers.

The four recommendations made by the youth organisations to the Leveson Inquiry are:

1.	That ‘age’ be included as a classification of discrimination in the Editors Code Clause 12.i, such as in the NUJ Code of Conduct 9 which should be amended to: ‘Produces no material likely to lead to hatred or discrimination on the grounds of a person’s age, gender, race, colour, creed, legal status, disability, marital status, or sexual orientation’.

2.	That a new clause be added both to the Editors Code and the NUJ Code of Conduct that reflects the damage caused by generalising negatively around children and young people. For example: ‘Journalists should exercise a duty of care and avoid negative generalisations about children and young people’.

3.	That the Press Complaints Commission is made more accessible to children and young people and the PCC develop a ‘child and young person friendly’ interface on their website with language that is accessible to children and young people.

4.	That the Press Complaints Commission ensures someone within the organisation has trained skills in working directly with children and young people in order to handle their complaints with sensitivity and discretion.

Are the media and regulatory processes discriminatory against Children & Young People?

“When a photo of a group of perfectly ordinary lads standing around wearing hooded tops has become visual shorthand for urban menace, or even the breakdown of society, it’s clear that teenage boys have a serious image problem. The teen boys’ “brand” has become toxic. Media coverage of boys is unrelentingly negative…our research shows that the media is helping make teenage boys fearful of each other.” Fiona Bawdon, Women in Journalism.

“Newspapers and TV have in the past demonised and stereotyped young people..” Nick Clegg, Deputy PM1
“Media reporting of children is mainly hostile” Polly Toynbee, Guardian Columnist
“…the media should try and report on children and young people in a fair and balanced way” Boris Johnson
“It feels like everyday there is another news story denigrating young people” Shami Chakrabarti, Liberty

In 2008 the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child urged that the UK government take ‘urgent measures to address the intolerance and inappropriate characterization of children, especially adolescents, within society, including the media…’ For over 5 years, there have been countless campaigns on this issue, with little success. This submission will highlight particular evidential reference to research carried out by Women in Journalism, Children and Young People Now, Citizenship Foundation, Children’s Rights Alliance for England, UK Youth Media Council, Youth Media Agency, British Youth Council, Barnardos and Institute for Global Ethics UK Trust.

Misrepresentation of young people in the Media – showing imbalance

- 76% of press coverage of young people is negative. (Children and Young People Now 2009)

- “Young people are, on the whole, not asked or given the opportunity to comment in an article which involves young people, especially if the article is negative”. Tom Webb, 21.

- “I felt overwhelmed with the way the riots was publicised and was very scared. There are no real positive role models in the press especially for me a young black boy”. 15 yr old.

- ‘We are a group of 14-year-old boys from the Reclaim project; we have been approached by so many different newspapers, magazines and TV companies, most of who want to talk to us about guns and knives and gangs. We keep trying to explain that we are not involved in gangs and crime; we’re doing positive things in this area – and then journalists go away, as they tell us that’s not the story people are interested in…’ Open letter from Manchester-based Reclaim, published in Guardian, 25 August 2008.

Generalisations of all children and young people in a negative light

- 85% of teen boys said newspapers portray them in a bad light. Echo, 2009 for Women in Journalism

- 79% of children and young people feel that adults see them in a negative light. Youth Media Agency Pilot Survey, November 2011.

- What the papers say – ‘What word other than “feral” better describes the swarms of hooligans abandoned to their own devices by slattern mothers and absentee “babyfathers”? No one crosses the road if they spot a crocodile of Boy Scouts coming in the other direction. But nor does anyone in their right mind risk walking through a scrum of hoodies hogging the pavement – not unless they fancy a knife in their ribs.’ Richard Littlejohn, Daily Mail,18 November 2008.

Case Study – August Riots Thomas Hammerberg from the Council of Europe raised an issue with the media’s coverage of the August riots, which from the onset singled out children and young people as the rioters, despite only 26% being 10-17. In a survey to find out the views of young people on the riots, one teenager commented on the media’s unfair coverage of the events: “I saw a headline which said ‘teenagers rob local shop’. It’s stupid because you wouldn’t say ‘adults rob the local shop.

Tuesday 7th Feb was Safer Internet Day (#SID2012) this year’s theme was ‘Connecting generations and educating each other’, and the slogan “Discover the digital World together…safely!”

Beat Bullying have just released “Virtual Violence II: Progress and Challenges in the Fight against Cyberbullying” commissioned by Nominet Trust and in collaboration with the National Association of Head Teachers. It will be unveiled in a hard-hitting Panorama documentary which aired on the BBC (Monday 6th Feb) and reveals that cyberbullying, as a weapon of choice amongst the nation’s youth, is showing no signs of dissipating, with 350,222 children – or 1 in 13 – experiencing persistent and intentional cyberbullying, with just under a quarter (23%) reporting that the bullying lasted for a year or more, and two in five (40%) said that it lasted for months or weeks. If you missed the Panorama report check it out online on BCCiPlayer.

My contrubtion to SID was to support and help Stephn Carrick-Davies on creating complemtary acivity session plans to be used in conjunction with the newly created Munch, Poke, Ping films. These films explore how social media and mobile phone technology affects young people’s peer relationships, behaviour and identity and how they cope when there is conflict online.

The project works directly with young people who are, or who feel, excluded and uses film-making to help ‘unlock’ and explore young people’s experience of growing up online. All the films on this website have been devised and acted by young people who have been excluded from main-stream schools and being taught in Pupil Referral Units.

Check out the MUNCH, POKE, PING website to review the films and the resources created.

When developing, delivering & evaluating E-safety messages and activities consider the following:

RELEVANCY It is important to identify the understanding and young people’s experiences specifically on internet safety. Be considerate and initially explore issues about sharing photos (consent to post images & images appropriate to be posted) experiences of online cyber bullying. If you haven’t run a session with young people about cyberbullying there are some excellent resources designed specifically for secondary schools see www.digizen.org, http://cybermentors.org.uk and http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk Start from the relatively ‘low impact, high incidence’ risks as this may be more productive than starting from ‘high impact, low incidence’ risks.

REALISTIC – Asking young people not to tag themselves on any photos on a social network site is highly unlikely. Be realistic, instead safety messages should focus on supporting young people to think critically about what and with whom they share photos or comments with online. Social network sites do offer privacy and account settings options, however, they can be complex. Break down the information into ‘bite-size’ sections i.e. sharing personal information, photos security settings, posting messages etc.

POSITIVE – Activities and advice based on fear can have unintended consequences and negative impacts upon young people’s use of social media. It is important that safety messages and interventions are delivered in a balanced manner which encourages and supports young people to consider the positive and negative aspects of online social networking. Often a focus on the positive aspects of SNS will provide an opportunity to talk about safety and sensible conduct.

Do you use skype? Or know of someone who uses skype? Never used Skype? Over 170 million people use skype.

Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free. Use the instant messaging service, share document for free and you can do web conferencing. I use it to keep in contact with friends and family both in the UK and internationally. I also use it within a professional capacity to communicate with clients, colleagues and young people.

Overview of SKYPE

Positives aspects for using Sykpe to connect with people:

Easy to use and it’s free. My grandfather aged 90 years uses skype!

It saves the cost of travel, time spent traveling and hire of a meeting venue. It also allows flexibility to move an appointment, if there are unexpected deadlines or a crisis.

In my experience some young people are more open and honest, possibly as they feel disinhibited to express themselves within their own home.

When working with hard to reach young people, it can be helpful to use skype to keep in touch in between appointments, follow up checks or activities to help strengthen the ‘trust’ between a youth practitioner and the young person. Also if a young person has a question that they don’t feel comfortable asking directly they can ask on Skype or use the Skype instant messaging service.

You can send documents (even HUGE ones.) for FREE. I find this so helpful that you can send a document that is being discussed with a client or a helpful training advice sheet for a young person.

You don’t have to wear any makeup to hold a skype voice chat converstation – YES!

Last year (July 2011) Facebook launched a new video chat product, powered by Skype – video chat.Click HERE for a film clip of Mark Zuckerberg showcasing the new function: “This type of thing is only possible because of the social infrastructure that already exists”

Considerations for when using skype:

It’s good that a young people has to catch the bus by themselves, enter a new venue and hold a meeting with a youth adviser. It helps prepare them for future work/college interviews and how to present themselves to people outsider their community.

Occasionally the quality of the call can be poor, but often by re-dialing can help improve the line.

Some young people may not have a computer with a camera and microphone or the digital competencies to create a skype account.

Privacy – The computer maybe located in a shared family space so there is lack of privacy to discuss sensitive issues or that simply they want to meet face-to-face to discuss their query or source information.

Be clear about your purpose for using skype, what is your role and the service your organisation offers to young people and partner organisations. The skype call can easily migrate from you offering specific support offered by your organisation to nattering about everything under the sun. Young people are very savvy at changing the conversation and it’s important to maintain ‘professional boundaries’.

Be clear when, duration and how often you can ‘talk online’, some young people especially isolated vulnerable young people may possibly try to establish contact with increased frequency. The key is to contract clear boundaries and expectations at the beginning and reference as required. If concerned keep a record and share this with your manager during supervision or immediately if there are safeguarding concerns.

Can you RECORD a Sykpe conversation? Yes there is Evaer which supports recording Skype video calls to your hard disk with side-by-side, separate files, audio-only, local-webcam-only and remote-webcam-only modehttp://www.evaer.com. There are other on the markey, have a search around for which best fits your requirements.

Helpful information:

Questions:

- Have you used skype to connect with young people or collegues?

- What was your experience?

- What do you perceive as added benefits and challenges of using this type of online communication tool?

Last week I met with Stephan Carrick -Davies who released a superb report in July 2011 commissioned by the Training Deveoplemnat agencyMunch, Poke, Ping – Vulnerable young people, social media and e-safety. The focus of the research was to consider the risks which vulnerable young people, excluded from schools and being taught in Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), encounter online and through their mobile phones. The aim was to then ascertain what specific advice, support and safeguarding training staff working with these vulnerable young people need when it comes to understanding social media and mobile technology. Stephen was kind enough to sit and share some of his insights form the research in the below film clip.

Filmed interview about the Munch, Poke, Ping research.

The aim of the 2nd stage of the Much, Poke, Ping project is to create, disseminate and scale up a series of positive, creative E-safety resources targeted at staff working with vulnerable young people in PRU (Pupil Referral Units). There are 3 work packages; creation of 2 film clips; Young people to choose the theme for the film clip (identity, coping or conflict) and social media.

Stephen and I reviewed the first 2 films that have been planned, captured and edited with a group of young people from Croydon PRU. The first clip is called ‘Who’s This?’ and is about ‘Fraping’. After much discussion between Stephen and I the title of this film was changed from ‘You’ve been fraped’ to ‘Who’s This?’. As although the YP use the term ‘Fraping’, and indeed came up with the title and the subject for the film we really felt it was such an emotive term and there are dangers in re-enforcing negative language (like ‘Happy Slapping’) and sensationalising a term which although horrific can somehow minimise the impact of physical rape. The YP still talk about Fraping in the film but it is within the context of them talking about the issue and what the word means.

The below film clip is about the pupils of the Coningsby Centre Pupil Referral Unit sharing their experiences about technology, risk and the making of the short film “Who’s This”.

Coningsby Film Project from Julian Parmiter on Vimeo.

The film took 6 weeks to produce (8 sessions with the YP) and was devised with the YP. The film resulted in equipping and supporting 8 very vulnerable young people and really supporting them in not just their understanding of this issue but their acting and producing skills. In my view – ‘youth practitioners’ need to aspire to ’supporting young people to migrate from being digital consumers to digital creator’ which in turn will enable them to self advocate for their rights and future opportunities.

Stephen has invited me to help co-develop the second work package is the creation of a set of ’scenario’ lesson plans for PRU staff to use with vulnerable young people which will address the issues of risky behavior which may start online but has very serious offline consequences. The lesson plans would culminate in resource to create a PUR Acceptable Use Policy thereby allowing the young people to participate and ‘own’ the creation of the policy. The added aspiration that the deliverables will showcase how drama and film making can be used to help young people to explore their online behavior and resulting decisions off line with their friends, peers, family and school life.

In my experience of working with vulnerable young people, digital media can offer them the opportunity to access instant information regarding employment, education, health, housing and help raise their aspirations. The relationship of a young person to their mobile device is not the passive ‘lean back’ of TV or the more active ‘lean forward’ of a PC, but rather the fully interactive ‘pull it forward’ of mobile. Its up close, it’s personal and it’s always on. Each young person lives in their own personal mobile universe, and each mobile universe is unique.

Google and FutureGov have joined forces with practical think tank, the RSA and some brilliant young people from the South London youth communications agency, Livity. For round two, Interactivism: Young People’s Hack Weekend is all about finding a NEET (Not in Education Employment of Training) solution (pun intended) to come up with innovative ways of using the web to help young people get into the job they want, or onto the training or education that will help them get there in the future.

For those of you unfamiliar with the term, for us, a hack is an event where computer developers, designers and people with ideas come together to build real, working prototypes (or models) of their ideas in a short amount of time.

The challenge opens for ideas on Monday 5 December 2011 – Closing date 25th January 2012.

Getting involved is easy:

Start by thinking of some of the biggest barriers facing young people trying to get into work, education and training, and what might be done to make that process easier and more successful. Once you have your idea worked out:
- Register on Simpl and create an Idea for your solution to the challenge.
- Be sure to tick the box marked ‘Interactivism’ when creating your idea to enter it into the challenge!

You don’t need to be an expert to apply, although having some experience or knowledge of the situation certainly helps. So maybe you work with young people, or are a young person yourself. (information directly from Google’s Interactivism website)

CLICK HERE TO VISIT THE MAIN WEBSITE

Unemployment – since September 2007, the UK has been suffering with worsening unemployment situations, young adults (16yrs old-25yrs old) being the most effected with over 1 million unemployed. The International Labor Organization’s “Global Employment Trends for Youth:2011 Update” revealed that the undercurrent of recession had exposed a myriad of problems, ranging from unemployment, underemployment and stress-related unemployment to extended inactivity, as well as the possible consequences of lower wages in the future. In a separate report the TUC suggested that over the last three years the number of young people unable to find work had at least doubled in a third of the local authorities (32 per cent).

Literacy & Numeracy Divide – While young peopleʼs writing standards steadily improved until 2006, levels have not increased since. Writing is much more than just an educational issue – it is an essential skill that allows people to participate fully in todayʼs society and to contribute to the economy. For one in six people in the UK today, literacy is a real struggle. They do not have the communication skills they need to fulfill their potential. Poor literacy means young people do not gain the knowledge they need to succeed at school and as adults will have limited employment opportunities which will impact on their mental and physical health. A 2011 CBI/EDI employer survey shows that 42 per cent are not satisfied with the basic use of English by school and college leavers. To address the weaknesses in basic skills, almost half of employers have had to invest in remedial training for school and college leavers.

The majority of young adults have grown up in a world where the Web has always been there – and has always been mainstream. They have entered adolescence in an era when Instant Messaging (IM) and Social Network Sites (SNS) have been impacting on the way relationships are formed and develop. Mobile phones are ubiquitous and the majority are Internet connected. They have never known a world in which there were only a few media channels, or where knowledge was only available from a library. This creates an accessible platform for the devlopment and deliver of some CRACKING INNOVATIVE TOOLS – GET YOUR THINKING CAPS ON PEPS!

Film: I’m a NEET – Spill Media produced this film with a group of NEET young people, through Swansea Youth Service

Last week I meet up for a coffee and catch up with Kieron Kirkland who works at Nominet Trust http://www.nominettrust.org.uk which “supports initiatives that contribute to a safe and accessible Internet, used to improve lives and communities.” Firslty a ‘BIG thumbs up’ on the new website. Kieron works as a Educational Evaluator, reviewing and analyzing the impact, learning and difference where funds have been allocated and how the learning can be shared with other organisations and educational establishments. Below is an extract from his blog on the Nominet Trust website – Blog

Title: Evaluation should be about testing models, not organisations

We have a mission at Nominet Trust to understand how the internet can be used as a force to disrupt social challenges and create positive change (when I write this, it does vaguely sound like it should also be the motto of a lesser known slightly geeky comic book hero, whose secret power is wifi.) A lot of our work is about looking at new models for change. However, by their definition, not every new model is going to impact on a social challenge as deeply as another, and even if a model has worked in one place there’s no guarantee that it’s going to work in another. Scaling and replication is not a simple business. So, to even have a chance of understanding how these different models of change work in different arenas we need ensure that we capture the learning from projects that haven’t gone as planned, as much as those that have.

I am really excited by the work being undertaken by The Nominet Trust team and recommend you visit their website often to keep up to date with their blogs and upcoming funding opportunities. I would like to thank Keiron for meeting with me and ‘blowing my mind’ with all the new projects he has on the horizon. In addition him mentioning how he used travelled to the Arctic pole – you what!?!?

I originally meet Keiron in Bristol, at that time he worked at Bristol Future Labs http://www.futurelab.org.uk. Futurelab is an independent not-for-profit organisation committed to developing creative and innovative approaches to education, teaching and learning. They achieve this through a mixture of research, events, school development and resources across the UK and internationally. Their work to date covers a range of both topical and forward-thinking areas including curriculum innovation; digital literacy and participation; learning spaces; play and computer games and assessment.

Futurelab was set-up in 2001 as part of NESTA, with start-up funding from the Department for Education and Skills. Their initial remit was to capitalise on the UK’s strength in digital media and content to enhance the learning experience for school children. Early landmark projects included Savannah, MediaStage and Space Signpost. In April 2006 Futurelab spun out of NESTA to become an independent charity. The remit of the organisation evolved to focus more on learning and teaching innovation, maintaining its specialist knowledge of digital technologies but expanding into new areas such as social justice, and digital literacy and participation. The Futrelab website has some good infromation and research, so grab yourself a cuppa and check out their research – click here

The new format of the traditional Facebook wall attempts to use the data already from your Facebook wall to create a chronological digital scrapbook. Click here FACEBOOK TIME LINE to learn more. You click on GET TIMELINE to activate your Facebook Timeline.

There’s a seven-day review period Expires on Dec 22nd. Once upgraded, Facebook users will be able to work through their Timeline and get things ready before it goes public. During the seven-day review period, the Facebook user will be able to publish it at any time. If he or she chooses to wait, it will automatically go live after the week is up.

Cover Photo enables you to make an impression to your online friends. The image selected stretches across the page’s width, you have the option to ‘reposition’ the image to get the best ‘angle’. The Facebook user’s profile photo, which is seen across the site, is now just a small square. Interestingly when you select to add a cover image Facebook states: Note: This space is not meant for banner adverts or other promotions. Please don’t use content that is commercial, promotional, copyright-infringing or already in use on other people’s covers.

No new information is being shared. Yes, Timeline is bringing back a previous old posts. But these posts have long been viewable on Facebook. Before, a friend would have had to go to a profile and click again and again for more posts, but would eventually travel back in time. We recommend you review your account & privacy settings. Click on ‘ABOUT’ under your profile picture and review the information you are sharing about yourself: Work place, school, relationship, date of birth, personal statement about yourself etc. We suggest that you consider ‘carefully’ what information you may want to ’share’ only with yourself i.e. I personally do not share my date of birth, school I attended, work place details. This is to protect myself from identity fraud and also I don’t want to disclose that information to Facebook and advertisers. Click on ‘EDIT’ and select the privacy settings to protect your personal information.

Your privacy settings on old posts will remain. A post shared four years ago that was set to be viewable to just friends will continue to be viewable to just friends. The only concern here lies in how a user’s definition of friend has changed. A photo or status update that in college that was OK for friends might not be OK for friends now, which might include coworkers.
Posts can be expanded. Timeline already tries to guess which of your posts will be the most interesting and it makes those viewable. It can try and guess here by how many likes or comments a post has received. If there is a post that should be expanded and is not — like a new job or college graduation — you can expand it.

Life Event – This is a new feature located on the ‘update status’ function. If you click on ‘LIFE EVENT’ there will be a range of ‘life event’ will appear i.e. work & education and family & relationships etc. If you select one of the options, further options will appear and you can add the corresponding information. You can then add the information and have the option to add photos or film clip. This ’story’ can also be expanded so it appears predominately across the time line/Facebook wall.

PLEASE do check your privacy settings to review if you have selected to ‘pre-approve’ photos, comments and tags before they are posted on your wall….now know as ‘TIMELINE’. check out the below short, easy to understand film clip on the new privacy settings (created by Gordy Hanner)

Online Youth Outreach would like to share and encourage YOU to share this great campaign by Kids Company. This charity helps over 17,000 vulnerable children and young people in and around London, and this year, as always, they are hosting a Christmas Day party for thousands of kids who might otherwise spend the holiday alone. On the day, dedicated volunteers will cook a feast for 3,500 kids at the party, and will create food packages for 4,000 others. To raise money to make the event possible, they have created a Facebook app that allows people to make small donations to the party in the form of virtual gifts, from party hats to Brussels sprouts to a star for the tree.

Making donations tangible makes for a fun user experience and allows donors to put their personal touch on their contribution. Take a look: www.facebook.com/kidscompany
PLEASE can you promote this event through TWITTER #XmasToRemember
To click onto the Kids Company Facebook page and LIKE the page, so this is shared through your online social networks.

I have cried a great deal this last week. I have opened news papers throughout this week and read numerous articles where children have been killed by their fathers or parents. One article shared how the children had defense wounds before being murdered, that is sickening, despicable and this can not continue. Numerous children witness domestic violence the physical abuse but also the psychological and emotional abuse that take place. Some children are victims and sadly when the parent seeking to flee to safety, that is the most dangerous period when the abuse can escalate out of control. There have been improvements in the police service through training and increased communication with multi agency groups but still there is so much more that could be done to protect children & young people. 2 woman a week die due to domestic violence, many are mothers, sisters, grandmothers – family members.

There are difficult challenges already upon Children and Family services across the UK due to the public sector cut backs. Community, Children and Youth services have been the hardest hit with many community, children and youth provisions needing to reduce their service provisions in rural and urban areas and in some case cease all together. In my view these cut backs will cost the government and us as tax payers more in the future to tackle the increased isolation of vulnerable children & young people (children & young people from both poor and wealthier communities – vulnerability present’s in many forms). Due to the increased lack of child & youth specific safe places in local communities for them to spend time when home, school or their street is not a safe haven. Where they can meet youth practitioners who are trained to develop positive relationships of trust with these vulnerable young people to offer support, guidance and raise aspirations. Community practitioners, Children and Youth practitioners are trained to ‘watch’ for key indicators when a child or young person may need additional support i.e. change in behave, hygiene or the way they dress, body language, increased or de-creased attendance to provision and asking the question in a respectful and gentle manner ‘ You ok?’

Social media platforms and online communities for many children & young people can be a place to spend time with their friends to connect, offer support to each other, to escape from the off line work, play and explore their identity. There are numerous complex issues to consider: protection, provision for internet safety training, prevention of harm. Equally there are some excellent opportunities for Children and Family services to connect and maintain contact and offer support to vulnerable children & young people. Children & young people who witness and each day survive domestic violence should be offered support and advice where they spend time online i.e. social network platforms, online games and through mobile devices.

There are numerous ethical considerations of confidentiality and privacy, how to offer support to a children and young person privately so they are not placed at risk? Numerous council websites have ‘panic buttons’, so could a private message be sent to offer support with a link to a children/youth provision website with a panic button. When delivering training we encourage youth provisions to have themes for each week to raise young people awareness on mental health, safe sexual practice, information on domestic violence ect. There is also the added security option to request a code to be set to your mobile to be inputted when logging into your Facebook account this could prevent the risk of the abusive parent(s) from hacking into the Facebook account. How many young people know how to activate this? Do you?
